Monogram Etiquette
A simple guide to getting it just right.
Monograms are a timeless way to personalize gifts, clothing, and keepsakes—but knowing the proper order can make all the difference! Whether you’re shopping for yourself or gifting someone special, here's a quick guide to help you choose the perfect monogram style.
Traditional Monogram Formats
For Individuals (3 Letters)
Format: First Name – Last Name – Middle Name
Example: Whitney Elizabeth Sweeney → wSe
(Note: The last name initial is placed in the center and slightly larger.)

For Married Women (Maiden Name Option)
Format: First Name – Married Last Name – Maiden Name
Example: Whitney Day Sweeney → wSd

For Men (Straight Initials)
Format: First – Middle – Last
Example: Tyler O'Brien Sweeney → TOS
(All letters the same size, in order of the full name.)

Stacked Monogram (2-over-1 Style)
Format: First – Middle – Last
Example: Robert Ralston Sweeney → R over R, next to a larger S
(First and middle initials are stacked on the left, with the last name initial larger on the right. This style is modern and masculine—perfect for items like luggage tags, towels, or cufflinks.)

For Couples
Format: Her First – Shared Last – His First
Example: Whitney & Tyler Sweeney → wSt
(The shared last name is centered and larger.)

For Children
Use the traditional 3-letter format:
First – Last – Middle
Example: Palmer Jeanne Sweeney → pSj
Tip: Baby and toddler items look especially sweet with a monogram!

Single-Letter Monograms
Sometimes simple is best! A single last name initial is a clean, elegant option—great for towels, bags, or home décor.
